ひばり美空さんの「川の流れのように」の歌詞を訳しみながら、私は変なことを見ました：　「任せていたい」。　見たことがぜんぜんないと思うので、動詞の意味は何でしょうかなぁ。

I'm a pretty early student, but I don't think I've seen progressive -いる plus -たい. Does it refer to a situation that ひばりさん wants to be in? 　「川の流れのように、緩やかに、この身を任せていたい」—is it the difference between a discrete action (such as jumping into a river) and a state of mind (such as entrusting oneself to the 川/時代/過去/未来/whatever)?

また、「この身を任せていたい」というのは、少し詩的な表現でもあるでしょう。
The phrase sounds a kind of lyrical expression. (to me, at least)

As you see, the song describes about a "long period of time". It seems to me that the "wordy" (in a good way) phrase enhances the feeling of the length of Hibari's journey that she embraces now. And it could emphasize her hope that the state will last long.

身を任せたい vs. 身を任せていたい
（身を任せる + ～ている + たい）
静かな時間を過ごしたい　vs. 静かな時間を過ごしていたい
（時を過ごす + ～ている + たい）
愛し続けたい　vs. 愛し続けていたい
（愛する + ～ている + たい）

In addition to that, one of the answers why the lyricist phrased it like that would be the number of the notes in the melody. The following score shows the number of the letters perfectly fits with the first chorus which is "いくつも時代は過ぎて".
