Can anyone help with the katakana quizzes?

Postby phreadom » Sat 08.28.2010 10:44 pm

Some users have rightfully pointed out that the later katakana lessons use kana that hasn't been introduced yet. :(

http://thejapanesepage.com/beginners/katakana/page05
http://thejapanesepage.com/beginners/katakana/page06
and so forth.

Up until that point, the kana used for the quiz words at the end of each lesson only include those already covered and explain any new parts like the ー etc.

Can anyone help me come up with some more words that fit these guidelines for the last half of the quizzes?

We could probably add some small notes about the ッ etc if need be etc.

What do you think?

Lesson 1 is アイウエオ
lesson 1 wrote:エア ____________ This means ____________
アイ ____________ This means ____________
イア _____________ This means _____________
オア _____________ This means ______________ (think of a row boat)

Lesson 2 is カキクケコ
lesson 2 wrote:キー ____________ This means ____________ [The ー means to make the previous sound longer (like the hiragana う often does)]
カウ ____________ This means ____________ [Think of an animal]
ケーキ _____________ This means _____________ [Something to eat]
コーク _____________ This means ______________ [Something to drink]

Lesson 3 is サシスセソ
lesson 3 wrote:キス ____________ This means ____________
サケ____________ This means ____________ [This is usually written in hiragana and is a traditional Japanese drink]
サイ _____________ This means Rhino [Sorry, you probably couldn't guess this meaning, but try to read it!]
アシ _____________ This means ______________ [means a body part in Japanese (again usually written in hiragana or kanji]
ケース _____________ This means ______________ [something you carry - remember the ー means to make the previous sound longer]
アース _____________ This means ______________ [No, it doesn't mean a body part! Remember Japanese doesn't have a 'TH' sound and think of a planet]

Lesson 4 is タチツテト
lesson 4 wrote:テスト ____________ This means ____________
アイス ____________ This means ____________
コート _____________ This means ____________
アート _____________ This means ______________
アウト _____________ This means ______________
ツアー_____________ This means ______________
タコス _____________ This means ______________ [This is a Mexican food]

Up until this point they all use only kana that have been introduced so far. When the ー is introduced in lesson 2, it comes with an explanation, and when it's used in lesson 3 there is a reminder.

Starting with Lesson 5 though, we see the use of kana that haven't been covered yet, and things like ッ etc that aren't explained.

Lesson 5 is ナニヌネノ
lesson 5 wrote:ナビ ____________ This means ____________
ニット ____________ This means ____________
カヌー _____________ This means ____________
シチー _____________ This means ______________
ナース _____________ This means ______________
ソナー_____________ This means ______________

ナビ - neither ヒ nor the use of tentens have been covered yet.
ニット - small ッ hasn't been covered yet.

Lesson 6 is ハヒフヘホ
lesson 6 wrote:ハニー ____________ This means ____________
ヒット ____________ This means ____________
ファン_____________ This means ____________
ヘア _____________ This means ______________
ホワイト _____________ This means ______________
ハーフ_____________ This means ______________

ヒット - ッ not explained yet.
ファン - ァ modifying フ not explained yet, and ン not covered yet.
ホワイト - ワ not covered yet.

Lesson 7 is マミムメモ
lesson 7 wrote:マン ____________ This means ____________
ミート ____________ This means ____________
コーム_____________ This means ____________
メキシコ _____________ This means ______________
モーア _____________ This means ______________
イニ、ミニ、マイニ、モ_____________ This means ______________

マン - ン not covered yet.

Lesson 8 is ヤユヨ
lesson 8 wrote:ヤフー ____________ This means ____________
ハレルヤ____________ This means ____________
ユタ_____________ This means ____________
トヨタ _____________ This means ______________
ユース_____________ This means ______________
ヨーヨー _____________ This means ______________

ハレルヤ - レ and ル not covered yet.

Lesson 9 is ラリルレロ
lesson 9 wrote:アイスクリーム ____________ This means ____________
アメリカ ____________ This means ____________
ローソク_____________ This means candle (not from English)
キレイ _____________ This means pretty in Japanese (you may know this one already)
テレビ_____________ This means ______________ [NOTE: If you have studied Hiragana, you are familiar with the tenten marks (looks like quotes over the ヒ). It changes the sound from hi to Bi - more on this later...]
ハロー _____________ This means ______________

These are all fine, in part because テレビ makes sure to mention the ヒ→ビ change from the tentens.

Lesson 10 is ワヲン
lesson 10 wrote:ハワイ ____________ This means ____________
タワー ____________ This means ____________
チキン_____________ This means ____________
コーン _____________ This means ______________
マン_____________ This means ______________
ワシントン _____________ This means ______________

These are all fine. :D

NileCatさんとtakirasさん、本当にありがとう!

Do you think we'd be fine using some of the words with the ッ (and maybe even ファ etc) as long as we gave a brief explanation and maybe linked to the lesson where they were covered more fully?

Or should we avoid them?

I think it might be better to include them because otherwise if someone were only studying the katakana, they wouldn't see them until after the lessons were over. If we include it, at least they get more of a chance to see it in use as they learn. :)

(If they study the Hiragana first and then the Katakana, they should be familiar with the っ already, but they still wouldn't be familiar with the ファ because I think such combinations are only used in katakana.)
