Why is となり used here?

While reading about the heat wave in Japan this summer (my sympathies, by the way), I keep coming across this use of となり:

東京都心では記録更新。22日、最高気温が32.7度となり、今年の真夏日が観測史上最多の71日となったのです。


Why not ほとんど、八九分、近い、ぐらい、 etc.?

It is not 隣, but the particle と and the stem of なる.
我が思わぬ、故に我が無し…

So to say, "With the temperature reaching (becoming) 32.7 degrees,"?
