Sentence check!

Postby rachxo » Sat 09.25.2010 5:46 pm

Hello! Could someone please tell me if this is correct? I would really appreciate it! :)

(会社で木村さんとゆきこさんが喋っています)

きむら:ゆきこさん、もう書類を書いておきますか?
ゆきこ:いま、書いています!四時ごろに書いて終われるでしょう。<<------ At around 4 o'clock I will finish writing.
きむら:そうですか?よかった。会議は五時にですから。<<--- good because the meeting is at 5 o'clock

ありがとう!=)

Correct in what sense?

Your English readings for the dialog are good.

Thank you! Well I was just wondering if all the Japanese sentences corresponded correctly to what I wrote in English? :)

きむら:ゆきこさん、もう書類を書いておきますか?

Sounds fine to my native ears, however, I'm not quite sure if the sentence is appropriate for your original idea.
This sentence means:
"Yukiko-san, do you want to draw up the document now?
(Yukiko-san, are you going to start preparing making the document now?)
If you want to say "Yukiko-san, have you already finished your document?", it would be;
ゆきこさん、もう書類はできましたか?
(Yukiko-san, has the document been done already?)

ゆきこ:いま、書いています!四時ごろに書いて終われるでしょう。<<------ At around 4 o'clock I will finish writing.

The first sentence is fine.
The second sentence sounds a little bit off to me.
When you want to combine the two words, "write" and "finish", "書き終わる" would be the natural expression.
4時ごろに書き終わるでしょう。 ← That's what you said in English above. (I WILL FINISH)
If you want to add "be able to 書き終わる"...well, that's actually a tricky matter though, "書き終われる" is commonly used.
4時ごろに書き終われるでしょう。←That's what you tried to say in Japanese above.

きむら:そうですか?よかった。会議は五時にですから。<<--- good because the meeting is at 5 o'clock

会議は五時にですから is ok. Makes sense at least. However, we don't use this form "に・です" here for some reason. The に would require a verb that indicates a certain action in this kind of context.

会議は五時ですから (at five)
会議は五時からですから (from five)
会議は五時に始まりますから (starts at five)
