small question

Postby Stefan » Thu 10.14.2010 8:50 pm

is there any real difference between the grammatical phrases:

とうてい。。。。ない・無理です
とても。。。。。ない

Example sentence 'I cant possibly do this work in 3 days.'

とうていこの仕事三日では出来ません。
とてもこの仕事三日では出来ません。

Both are negative expressions and express that speakers belief is impossible or at the very least difficult. any differences between them?

much appreciated in advance.

とうてい~ない and とても~ない , both mean "impossible". these is not different between both).

とても=very

とても + ない=  impossible

とても~ない=とうてい~ない

(I feel とうてい~ない means emphasizes "impossible"a little bit more than とても~ない.)
