I'm not sure that Japanese people really distinguish between syllables and morae. We normally say that e.g. "かんたん" is two syllables, but four morae, but I don't think it's a hard-and-fast rule (even though you'd say it as two syllables virtually all the time). For example, Japanese songs often break up syllables in a way that sounds strange to the foreign ear -- and would also sound strange to the native ear if you broke them up that way in normal speech, but that's more because it doesn't flow than because it's "incorrect".
