Postby otaku oujo sama » Sat 12.18.2010 3:56 am

:colonthree:

Are you trying to say ~

Literal meaning is:
~ is the reason (why you do/insist so) ?

(reason) This is simple, isn’t it?

~ is the reason that you are tired?

The fact that "you want to say he might be she" is the reason that you dare to say such a stupid thing?
( = Are you trying to say he is she? )

I think your English phrasing may be a little misleading in this one spot.
I'll clarify a little and hope I don't screw up? :D

I think B's line doesn't mean 「
but either「それを言う理由は私とデートしたくないから?」

EDIT: It also seems very close to 「つまり、私とデートしたくないってこと?」

Thank you, Hyperworm! :D :sweatdrop:

EDIT:
If I used the words "your story" to explain the meaning of "わけ", does it make sense in English?
~ is your story?
I mean, I've noticed わけ is not always used to mean the reason.
e.g. ま、こういったわけでして could be translated like "that's the story", I think.

That’s why I asked the question in my previous post. :D

The point is that “~わけ?” has a strong nuance to “blame” or “accuse” or “tease”.
(again)-(that)-(same thing)-(~is your story?)

Or, let me explain a little bit philosophically.
What does “reason” mean?
In a sense, it is something that makes “cause” into “result”, right? It can have a similar meaning to some other words such as motivation or circumstances, in theory.
When we use the word わけ(訳), in our mind, we have an intention to refer to something behind the result. (The "result" means the fact that the person has told you something. )

Therefore,
Are you trying to tell me the same thing again?
Are you trying to use the same (tacky) trick again?
Again, you’re trying to tell me your crap, aren’t you?
Again, what you want to do is to repeat the same story?
(Again, your intention is to repeat the same thing?)
(WHAT THE HELL IS THE REASON YOU REPEAT THE SAME THING?)
*note. Only nuance-wise. Not an accurate translation.

= That story/rhetoric again? (meaning-wise)
= I'm fed up with your crap. (nuance-wise)

:sweatdrop:

EDIT:
Dictionary-wise , http://dic.yahoo.co.jp/dsearch?enc=UTF- ... &pagenum=1
In this case, because it is a colloquial expression, the closest definition would be:
More complicated? Yeah, I see...

EDIT2:
Ok. I’ve made up my mind.
Let me show you more difficult example, boldly.

Roughly translated:
A: Are you trying to say you failed?
B: No way!

Remind Hyperworm's post. In many cases, ~わけ is interchangeable with ~(って)こと.
If it makes sense to you, please let me know.
If not, I'd need someone's help. :D

EDIT3    :
How about this?
~, is that the phenomenon (including reason, cause, result, intention) that I’m expected to realize now?

I know it sounds very weird, though.

You want to say he might be she, is that the phenomenon (including reason, cause, result, intention) that I’m expected to realize now?

You’re gonna use the same rhetoric/pattern again, is that the phenomenon (including reason, cause, result, intention) that I’m expected to realize now?

That phenomenon (including reason, cause, result, intention) doesn’t exist!
