Hi,

I have a friend who lives in Japan, who I will be visiting in a few months and she said I should learn some Japanese before I go, so here I am!

I still cannot get over how great this site is! I had to show some appreciation somewhere I couldn't hold it back any longer, you guys ROCK!

I'm no master but in the 2 days of studying the Hiragana I'm confident with the symbols and pronunciation.

So hopefully in a little while I can get some basics in place for my trip.

I lived in Brisbane from 1992 to 1994.

ありがとう is arigatou or arigatō in romaji.

If you are going to type in romaji it is a good practice not to leave letters out, ie use kana spelling or wāpuro rōmaji. That way when you use the IME to input Japanese text you will get the correct results.

Cut and paste

In Windows you can enter a character by holding down the Alt key and typing +nnn on the numeric keypad (Num Lock on) where nnn is the decimal value of the character, 333 for ō. ū is 363.

@chikara No not at the moment, I have 2 Silvias though 1 of which has a Skyline engine in it!!

When Im finished with them I will have more than enough money for a R32 GTR!!

Also on the topic of typing characters I have tried endlessly to get the languages to work on my pc.

I have xp professional but office 2007 and whenever I try and do the tutorial it fails. I have tried to load office 2003 on but it doesnt like the 2007 being there... If you or anyone whose reading this could enlighten me where I may be going wrong it would be greatly appreciated.

Have you read Questions about using Japanese on my computer in the FAQ?

The IME is a part of Windows so it should not matter what version of Office you are running. In XP you need to ensure you have the files for East Asian languages installed. This is under Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options -> Languages -> Supplemental language support.
