9.0 Magnitude hits Japan (Miyagi Prefecture)

Right now another big earthquake occurred in Nagano prefecture. Nagano is located at the center of Japan, it’s not Tohoku district. I don’t understand what’s happening here.

The Earthquake last year in Haiti was only a 7.0 magnitude... the one in Japan was 8.9 to 9.1. Even the local intensity on land, away from the epicenter was at least as bad as the very worse of the Haiti earthquake.

Not only that, but the big aftershocks in Japan seem to be around the 6.0 mark on average (high fives to low sixes)... in Haiti they were only around 4.5.

316,000 people died in Haiti. We can only hope that the number in Japan will be only a tiny fraction of that in the end. So far the numbers I'm hearing are only around between 1,000 and 2,000 maybe at most. This number may very well rise, but considering how much worse it was than Haiti, it could be vastly more terrible. This really is a testament to the Japanese people.

Thank their strict building codes, government working with the people, and world leading research into earthquake readiness and recovery.

It seems like from what I'm seeing so far that most of the damage has actually come from the tsunami rather than directly from the earthquake itself. It's such a terrible sight.

My heart goes out to all our friends in Japan right now.

It’s 9:00 AM.
This earthquake is different from the one we had in 1995. We Japanese people were aware of the terror of the inland earthquakes. But this time, the major damages are caused by tsunami. Many cities over a wide range have been entirely destroyed.
In Tokyo where I live, most of the city functions seem to have returned to normal although we still have small afterquakes very often.
All the TV stations have been broadcasting about this disaster through night. But hundreds of people are missing still now.

Here is a link to a map from the USGS website showing the quake and the aftershocks so far. It's pretty disturbing, especially when you consider that a 6.0 knocks things off of shelves and can cause poorly structured buildings to collapse, and the earthquake today was about 32,768 times more powerful. I hope you and any of your family and friends in Japan are all right.

36 hours have passed since the earthquake hit Japan.
The problem at the nuclear plants seems to be under control. I’m relieved.
Regarding the total casualties in Tohoku district, I think it would take days to reveal an entire picture. The problem is that quite a few small towns by the sea have been totally vanished. When the public organizations such as town hall, police station and fire department have been all destroyed, there is no way to figure out the damage officially.
We have been receiving many helping hands from many foreign countries, from 56 countries from over the world. We are deeply grateful.
