I've been watching the news and freaking out.

Still haven't heard from my friends in Sendai and Soma. :(

Sigh.

That's terrible!

I've got one friend I haven't heard from yet, but he was pretty far from where it was concentrated, I'm sure he's just freaked out. Still sucks though cause you never CAN know for sure....

I too have some friends in Sendai but I haven’t heard from them yet.
Sendai airport is completely ruined. It is located by the sea. But I couldn’t believe my eyes when the TV screen showed the terminal building like floating on the sea and many people on the roof waving their hands to the helicopter for help…

It's just so sad. Most of my friends are accounted for but a 5 year daughter if a friend is missing. There's not much hope of finding her, and her parents must be going crazy with worry and grief.

I heard this morning that an aftershock rocked the nuclear power plant. Is there anyone in Japan who can give us an update about this?

Just watched from CNN.com, they were sharing the google tools where you can search for missing person or share details of those that are safe.

tōkai-san, I’m afraid it would be almost impossible for anyone to tell straightforwardly about what’s happening there because it is too technical. It seems that they are now struggling to inject cooling water into the pressure vessels. The authorities don’t assume the worst scenario will become reality. It seems to me that the total meltdown of the reactor is unrealistic. Although some more slight amount of leak of the radiation is possible, I don’t think the widespread radioactive contamination will happen.

NileCat, I watched NHK just half an hour ago, they were saying, since yesterday until 1 week the mobile service is not available, is that true?

My hearing is not very good, but I can still read abit, so I just wanted to know if is my translation correct based on NHK, and is it what happening now at Japan?

Because I sent many msg to my friend and I do not received any reply, and all I can wish is the mobile service is out instead of something happened to him.

Thank you in advance.

@persephonequinn
It depends on the region. In Tohoku area, all the land/cell phone system seem to be dead at the moment. However, the data communication including e-mail system via cell-phones seems to be alive in most of the area. But the problem is that they don’t have the power supply.
In the rest of Japan, all the communication service are working properly although some delays of mail deliveries and some incidental disconnections are reported.

Thanks Nilecat for updating us. I feel relieved to hear from our TJP members that they are not really affected as they live far away from the disaster zones.

My prayers extend to people who are still isolated from the rescuers and their loved ones, and also to people who have been moving out areas and are now living in the emergency shelters due to the current nuclear situation. It's sad to see many roads are damaged and there's no easy and quick access to bring food, water or medical aids.

Regarding the problems about the nuclear power plants, this press conference would be the most precise information source you can find on the internet at the moment. It explains what happened there in an objective manner.

Btw, it's been officially corrected to "9.0-magnitude".

I was going to post the "before-and-after" site, too.

Damn. The Sendai airport is amazing enough, but whole communities have been wiped off the map, and the coastline has even changed.

Words -- at least polite ones -- totally fail me.

Nilecat, I hope you and all my other Nihon-based homies are doing well.

Also, as of tomorrow, Monday, the railroad system in Tokyo seems to be affected by the power supply problem.
