What is the status of the food, medicine, clothing, sanitation supply?

The news in Australia reported that blankets are needed urgently as it's really cold now, and that food and fresh water is in short supply in the worse hit areas. Vision of almost empty supermarket shelves was shown. Food supplies are being rationed. Each person received 1 bag of rice and 5 bottles of water. The elderly and young children are apparently receiving the bulk of the food.

I wish I could just reach inside the TV and share my food with them. I feel kind of guilty eating a big nutritious meal.

The death toll has risen to 3,373. And 7,558 people are still missing.
In Shizuoka prefecture (Tokai district), a M6.4 earthquake occurred three hours ago. Fortunately, only 19 people suffered slight injuries.
The situation at the nuclear power plants seems relatively stable at the moment.
In Tohoku district, it seems freezing tonight.

Only positive thing I can think about this is that the quake&tsunami didn't happen at nightime. The number of casualties would have been overwhelming.

In Japan, I think the spread of harmful rumors is remarkably few compared to the past disasters although the governmental tardy provision of information has been harshly criticized.
At the moment, the biggest problem at the suffered area seems to be the shortage of gasoline and oil. That’s because, in addition to the damages of the access roads, currently only 3 out of 9 refineries are in operation in the eastern area of Japan.

I agree. The earthquake hit at 2:46 PM. When we had a massive earthquake in 1995 in the western area of Japan, it happened at 5:46 PM. At that time, right after the quake hit, a lot of fires started and they added to the damage because many people were preparing the supper using the gas stove.

I really couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the footage of Sendai getting hit with that unstoppable water. Absolutely gutwrenching.
Though I hardly know any of you...let me just say, I hope that the wonderful community and individual strength that is already shown in Japan can keep up, despite what must seem a neverending catastrophe. From what is on the news, I don't think it's out of line to say that Japan is handling this with complete class. Please take care.

I unfortunately held my breathe for awhile logging on here, at first I made sure the immediate people I know over in Japan were ok..fortunately most of them are from the Kansai region, so they're ok. Then I sucked it up to get on here...this site has meant a lot to me over there years, I may not have contributed as much as I should but I come here for lots of things and have for many years.... this site means a lot to me. I sincerely hope anyone over there that is on this sight is ok (and all the countless people who are affected in that area) and I have been thinking about you. All the best. Much love.
