I think the pictures of the kokeshi dolls under the wooden planks are very surreal. The fact that kokeshi were originally used to 'remember' a lost child, this picture has the most immediate impact to me.. Very heartbreaking.

The picture at the Ishinomaki Shelter with the people excercising is also very surreal. For me, it shows that even in the most trying situations, the Japanese still hold to solid tradition.

do you mind if I forward these pictures (your link) to a few Japanese friends of mine?

I looked through all of these as well... very surreal and heartbreaking to see such utter devastation and to think of what those people must be going through to survive and try to rebuild, especially when other places so near by are essentially completely unaffected. :cry:
