Buying the genki textbook.
Well I'm going to be buying a genki textbook. But I see workbooks and textbooks online. I'm not sure what to get! The books are quite pricy, I don't have an especially fat wallet. Heck, I'm unemployed and still living under my parent's roof! (Well, I can't legally move out yet anyways...)
My main questions are: Do I need the workbook with the textbook?
And
Where did you buy your book(s)?
Thanks

I have the 1st edition, with the work book and answer book. I've honestly never used the workbook, so I'd say that if you're really tight on cash, you could probably skip it. You'll just need to make sure to use something like Anki or something to do your repetition so that you make sure to drill things into your memory (which is what the workbook is for).
The Japan Shop is also run by Clay, who owns this site... so buying books and materials from there helps keep this site up and running.

Do you think I could get a discount from buying there? :p

Clay already offers very low prices, and usually with cheaper shipping (or no shipping costs?) etc... do you see a cheaper price somewhere else, when shipping is included?
Not only is the final price about the same (or cheaper?), but it helps keep TJP available and helps Clay as a small business owner.
I was going to compare it to Amazon's prices, but they don't even have any in stock to compare too (they only have the older first edition ones, and their price really isn't any better even on that when you look at the total cost with shipping etc if I remember correctly).

Really he already cuts the prices as low as he can for us.

If you really can't afford it, maybe you should read the thread "Genki I" and "Japanese For Everyone" textbook comparisons and see if JFE might work for you... it's half the cost of the GENKI 1 textbook, but is MUCH more dense and you have to be a bit more self motivated etc... the review will explain, with pictures.

Yeah I was just looking around my wallet and bank. I DO have enough. Is there a place I can tell what's covered in genki I?

Re: Buying the genki textbook.
Congrats on ordering your first textbook!
I'm curious why he wouldn't buy from TheJapanShop, but thought it was ok to buy from EBay?
Personally I'd trust TJS a lot more than some random person on Ebay.
But yeah, I'd guess that goes to Clay.

Thanks.
It wasn't a matter of trust so much as a convenience. He doesn't have an amazon account apparently. And he didn't want to sign up to order that one book.

Thanks! Yep, that is our Ebay account. The order is MUCH appreciated.
I'm not sure if Pam got that in the mail today or not, but if she did, you should have received a tracking number from her.
I hope you will enjoy the book and Japanese.

This is the problem with many parents. Irrational, stubborn and stupidly set in their ways. Registering on amazon is basically built into your order, and takes 5 seconds...
Makes me glad I'm an adult

First text book ever bought. That's a milestone! Reading it now. I really need to memorize mi, and differentiate chi and sa, otherwise I may be horribly confused in the future.

I'm glad it arrived, but it looks a little bent. Did it arrive like that in the mail?
