Can't imagine why anybody would pronounce it "moe-key", aside from false analogy with Italian... and people generally don't know the rule for Italian in the first place. (For example, the brand "Freschetta" is clearly intended to be a play on "fresh", but it would be pronounced "fres-ket-ta" by an Italian...)

When I tell my friends here (inJapan) that westerners say ケリオキ instead of カラオケ it always gets such a huge laugh

And when I tell other Australians that in Japan Perth is "paasu" and Sydney is "shidonee", I also get a laugh. In fact the pronunciations of many words get mangled as they pass across language boundaries. Think about the usual American pronunciation of "Notre Dame", for example.
