Could someone explain this sentence?
I don't understand what the underlined part of this sentence means:
"when the same old dame was gravely seating herself to tell her neighbours a sad and melancholy story, Puck would slip her three-legged stool from under her, and down toppled the poor old woman, and the old gossips would hold their sides and laugh at her, and swear they never wasted a merrier hour."
¿彼らはもっと楽しい時間を無駄にしなかったと断言した???
Can someone please tell me what it means, or translate it into Japanese?
Thanks.

Re: Could someone explain this sentence?
ちょっと'ironic'な感じで、いつも時間を無駄にしているように聞こえます。もし'ironic'じゃなかったら、「これ以上楽しい時間を過ごしたことがないと断言した」というような意味だと思います。
Does this make more sense to you? Please forgive me if I have made you more confused
my Japanese is quite poor.

「こんなに楽しいことはなかったと(心から)言った」
・・・みたいな感じだと思います。

I agree with Nilecatさん's translation, it's far betterなぜなら、おまえは・・・・・・人形だ

Hi,
そんな意味だろうとは思うのですが、文法的にどうしてそういう意味になるのか知りたかったのです。
Ongakukaさんの説明でなんとなく分かりました。
ありがとうございます。

Ironicですか。なるほど、そう考えるとなんとなくわかったような気がします。「いつも時間を無駄に過ごしている」という前提で考えると意味が通りますね。
Thank you very much. Your Japanese is very good and natural.

その通りだと思います
I'm glad that it makes sense to you.
I spent some time thinking about it, and I came to the conclusion that the author decided to combine the standard set phrase (never__ a (merrier)__) with the irony of 'wasted' to create a subtle nuance that is quite hard to explain. It seems that way anyhow ^^; also I was able to benefit from Nilecatさんs good translation

なぜなら、おまえは・・・・・・人形だ
