AVGN? :D Or did you play it before that? :)

Yep, I saw it on AVGN. I did a translation of the Japanese version for lltvg.com immediately afterward.

I'm surprised that AVGN missed the uncensored Tanuki statue. It was even left uncensored in the American version.

By the way, your second example hits the mark perfectly, but I have to correct you on the first one as it's not a question.
When you find it, one of the characters picks it up and asks, What's going on in this character's mind is something like this: "I'm looking for the ball. Is this it?"
This is more like "So this is the gold ball!" (/so this is what the gold ball looks like/feels like/behaves like, etc).

Hmm, I suspected as much. It's still basically a rhetorical question and が is still working similarly, but yeah, it's not really the same thing as if it were an actual question in that case.

There is no point in explaining it in either language it's just something you will pick up. Don't waste your time analyzing it.

I will protect this village (as for this village, I shall protect it)
I will protect this village

the thing I wrote
(this is stupid but)
the guy that wrote me
the guy who ate the apple

not sure about the bottom two but I believe that's how it works in clauses.
は can work as を when the subject
