として

Postby asfalios » Tue 09.13.2011 10:28 am

Hello!

I have a really hard time with the usage of として in this sentence:
"この課では、国や地域に使われる漢字、部局などに使われる漢字のほかに、イ形容詞に使われる漢字として、さらに次の漢字を勉強します。"

Shouldn't として be used like this: "イ形容詞として使われる漢字" ?

I cannot put my mind around it being at the end of the sentence.

Can anyone help?

Hi asfalios.

In this case, 形容詞として doesn’t make good sense.
~として使われる means “be used as ~” . In your example, the word 形容詞 means “adjective”, right? In Japanese adjectives, kanji are used IN the words, not AS the words. Do you see the difference?

e.g.
美しい(adj) ← A kanji “美” is used in the word. The kanji itself is not an adjective. In other words, this kanji 美 can be used FOR the adjective “美しい”.

Your example sentence states that “We will study the following kanji(s) as the kanji which are (often) used for/in i-adjectives”.
