how to make a sentence when having multiple verbs?

Postby Joey 鷹 Vega » Fri 02.24.2012 6:55 pm

I have one question on grammar here. Pretty much I can understand all of the grammar points, but the one thing that I'm having trouble with is the making sentence when having multiple verbs in it. I don't know how to organized it, cause all I think about in a sentence is the verbs always being at the end. I need help on this so that way I can have a better understanding on how the way the verbs are put.

That 'one question' is asking about a -lot- of different grammar points. Yes, the basic Japanese sentences ends with a verb but that is not the only place they appear.

Essentially, though, other verbs appear in sentences one of two ways - in a continuative form, that is either stem or て form - as in,
店に行き、昼食を食べた。・店に行って、昼食をたべた。
(I) went to a shop and had lunch (there).

Or else they appear as words that modify nouns and become a noun phrase,
走る男を見た
(I) saw a man running.

Those two basic roles can combine with a wide variety of grammatical words and set patterns for many different meanings, as in the grammar for -ばかり, -ながら、-ことがある, -みたい, etc, etc.

So, what I'm getting at here is - how other verbs go into a sentence all depends on what you're trying to say, there are many grammar structures that involve other verbs besides the main verb at the end of a sentence.

That's really not helpful advice, I'm afraid. First you need to find out why multiple verbs are needed, then structure the sentence appropriately. I'd wager that most sentences with multiple verbs have no conjunction at all.

(私は)彼がお弁当を食べるのを見ていた。

(私は)彼女の態度がいつもとは違うのに気づいた。

Is this the kind of thing you mean? I apologize if this is already familiar to you.

In example 1, の Is used to turn 食べる Into 食べること (make the verb 'to eat' into a noun.) So it is the same as saying 食べることを見ていた。

Example 2 uses the same rule, except the verb 気づく takes に
なぜなら、おまえは・・・・・・人形だ

thanks on the extra info on that guys. I know people tell me that you use the V-masu stem, etc. But I'd only got little of info about using more than 1 verb in a sentence at the beginning. Thank you guys for explaining of how to use verbs in a sentence.
