あらゆるvs 全部

Postby Stefan » Mon 10.08.2012 5:42 pm

Both mean all however but 全部 means entire or altogether and あらゆる has the meaning of every.

My question is what is the nuance for あらゆる? I'm not familiar with あらゆる mostly because i've never heard it before now and can't find any good examples using the words.

The only place I've seen あらゆる used is in the description of the Chinese martial arts master Ba Kensei in the 史上最強の弟子ケンイチ manga: あらゆる中国拳法の達人, master of every Chinese martial art.

The Tanaka Corpus has several hundred J/E sentence pairs for both words. Look at:

http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/cgi- ... 4%C9%F4_1_

Note that あらゆる can only be used before a noun, whereas 全部 can be used more widely.

Of course. Duh the epic dictionary. Thank you. Don't know why I think about using that before.

あらゆる= all, every

全部= all, entire, whole, altogether

あらゆる is more of a textbook kind of word than a conversational word. The only place you would hear it is when somebody is making a speech. Other than that you will only see it in the textbooks or college papers. It is also an adjective pronoun so it always comes before nouns or at the end of the sentence.

全部 on the other hand is an adverbial noun. So 全部 has more leeway in sentences than あらゆる. Also the meanings of 全部 varies.

For example:

This is a banana. That is also a banana. Altogether there are two bananas.

O これはバナナです。あれもバナナです。全部で2本のバナナがあります。

X これはバナナである。あれもバナナである。あらゆる2本のバナナである。
