[Ongakuka]

This question is about Classical Japanese, not modern Japanese.

In Classical Japanese, the particle が can act as a kind of possessive marker like の. For example, おのが力＝己の力

However, like in modern Japanese, の can also have that same function. For example,　大君の御寿＝天皇のご寿命

My question is, are の and が

1. Completely interchangeable. Makes no difference which is used

2. Interchangeable, but the nuance is slightly different

3. The usage depends on context; they are not interchangeable.

If anyone can help me, it would be greatly appreciated.

Have you checked any 古語辞典?
According to mine,

== が ==
接続：　活用語の連体形に付く。中古までは人称代名詞（吾（あ）、誰（た）、己（おの）、など）に付く。
尊卑：　親愛・卑下・軽蔑の念を伴うものに付く傾向がある。

== の ==
接続：　中世末期まで活用語の連体形には付かない。中古までは、普通代名詞、指示代名詞（「こ」、「そ」、「か」など）に付く。
尊卑：　尊敬の念を伴うものに付く傾向がある。

Example:
「いかなれば、四条大納言のはめでたく、兼久がは悪（わろ）かるべきぞ。」
＝どうして四条大納言の歌は立派で、兼久の歌は悪いのだろうか。


※中古（ちゅうこ）というのは主に平安時代をさします。上古（じょうこ）の次、中世（鎌倉時代）の前です。

Thus, in some cases they are interchangeable, but the nuance is slightly different.

古語辞典なら旺文社のがお勧めです。iPad版もあります。
（最近iPadを使うことが多いので、文字の入力がおっくうになっています。なので、チャットから遠ざかっています。今はパソコンで入力しています。）

「の」と「が」の違い、私も勉強になりました。
たしかに、「が」は人称代名詞に付くことが多いですね。

そはわれもまた人類の一部なれば、
ゆえに問うなかれ、
誰(た)がために鐘は鳴るやと、
そは汝(な)がために鳴るなれば

For I am involved in mankind.
Therefore, send not to know
For whom the bell tolls,
It tolls for thee.
