RE: how to read a japanese book
Traditionally, Japanese text is read from top to bottom, with the book being read right to left.
Nowadays, however, with all of the Western influence felt in Japan, you will find publications reading from left to right, left to right, as well.
Typically, newspapers and novels still read top to bottom, right to left. Magazanes and non-fiction books can be either format.
Comic books tend to be read from right to left, but the text can be either top to bottom or left to right.
Are you confused yet?

Personally not very well. But seriously you can take some clues based on the book binding and layout other than that the above post hit it right on the head.
