Due to : よる or のためにために

Postby Penguinattack » Thu 06.06.2013 11:03 pm

Hi all

寒さによる、私は風邪をひいた
寒さのために、私は風邪をひいた
I want to say : due to the cold (weather) I caught a cold

I'm confused between which to use tame or yoru

Thanks!

I don't believe the first sentence is even correct.
You could perhaps say, 寒さにより私は風邪をひいた
or (私は)寒さによる風邪をひいた

There's nothing grammatically wrong with the second version, (寒さのために、私は風邪をひいた) but it feels 'off' to me. I'd check with a native speaker but I suspect it's a grammatically correct yet quite unnatural sentence. Part of the reason for that is ため is generally (but not always) a positive association, and I don't think this is a case where it can be used negatively.

I think you could say 寒さのせいで風邪をひいた, and that would be better (所為・せい is generally negative ... 'fault' rather than 'thanks to'), but you can also simply say, 寒さで風邪をひいた.
I feel this last is best simply because it's better to leave out unnecessary words, they only clutter your sentence and shouldn't be there unless you have a good, specific reason to put them there.

Not related to the grammar or anything, but y'know you can't get a cold due to cold weather, right? ;)

That's only a technicality. You do have to be exposed to a virus, but unless you live in a bubble, that happens regularly. If you lower your body's ability to defend itself through, say, prolonged exposure to the cold, then that virus can proliferate. (Of course, poor nutrition, overwork, lack of sleep, and too much alcohol can all also do the same thing to you. For a near-guaranteed bout of illness combine all of them.)

If we're picking nits, I'll say, you -can- catch a cold do to due weather, just, you can't catch a cold due -solely- to cold weather, there has to be other contributing factors.
