My Japanese app for intermediate levels

Postby Shizen08 » Mon 09.30.2013 12:04 pm

こんにちは、皆さん!

About four months ago I started on a project; a Japanese language app for intermediate and upper beginners. I've always been disappointed with the number of apps at this level. Almost every app I've seen is for beginners, which is awesome, but I need something a little more challenging.

So here it is! I would like to share it with all of you because I think many people who use this site could benefit from this kind of practice. (Especially if they are a t a similar level to me; where the beginner stuff is too easy but reading a book or watching TV in Japanese is still a bit too hard.) It's got listening practice, quiz games, reading comprehension, and focuses on building new vocabulary.

It's called "Japanese with Sophie" and it's available for both android and iOS phones and tablets.

Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=air.com.studyjapanesewithsophie.studyjapanesewithsophie&hl=en
iOS: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/japanese-with-sophie/id708597380?ls=1&mt=8
Website: http://studyjapanesewithsophie.com

I worked very hard on this so I'm just trying to spread the word. That would be a dream if I could make these as a full time job! :D

Thanks for reading!

I agree, looks cool. Is it a comprehensive review of vocab for that level range, or is it more of a smattering/ sampling that reviews a bit here and there? I assume if it's only $1.99 it's probably the latter? Did you have any native help to proof-read sentences or did you manage without?

I'll probably download it either way :)

Awesome!

Basically I picked a few subjects and worked on vocabulary relating to them (cooking, housework, shopping, emotions). I tried to include mostly words that are different than the obvious ones you learn as a beginner. There's probably around 60 focused vocab words per lesson. And I am currently working on a new lesson at the moment which I will add to the app as soon as it's done. So if you already have the app, I'm going to be adding new lessons in updates so they are free. Woo!

But I definitely had native speakers help me and do the voice acting and such.

I got it, it's great. In terms of design/ quality/ effect I'd give it 5 out of 5 easily. The only problem is, at the moment, it's quite short on material for binge studiers like myself. I look forward to updates ^^

Edit: I understand it must take a while to do all those illustrations/ animations, perhaps fitting 1 or 2 more words per illustration would make it easier to increase the amount of vocab? Just a thought.

Thank you so much! But I do agree, I need to make more levels. I definitely tried to shove in as many new words as I could in each sentence.

Since I do everything (art, animations, sentences, story) myself, it takes a lot of time. I was working on it some 12 hours a day and it took almost 3 weeks to do one level! D:

I am working on a new level at the moment, but I am also pretty busy with school.

I really appreciate your support. Thank you again for your kind words :D

Is there any particular subject or type of words you get confused with or would like to see a lesson about?

Intermediate Japanese is full of a TON of adverbs, many that sound similar- I get them mixed up all the time! heh

Anyway, good luck with your app ventures

Update!

I recently tried to upload a free demo version for iOS, but I forgot that they don't allow incomplete apps to be on their store, and anything containing the word "demo" will automatically be rejected.

So, I've uploaded a .swf file on my website for anyone who has an iphone and wants to play around with the app without buying it!

You can find it here:

Thank you!

(New lesson is underway and I plan on having it out by Christmas!)

Thank you! :D

Took a lot longer than expected, but I finally got a free version up on the app store and also updated the paid version with a new lesson. Yay!
