Is my translation correct?

Postby dogz » Mon 11.04.2013 3:37 am

First, new to the forums, hello!
If this kind of post isn't allowed here, please let me know!

I tried to translate an article to learn new words,
but I don't think it would help much if it's wrong.
Even if the English isn't natural, does it mean the same thing as the original?
Is there anything I didn't understand correctly?
This is the first time I've tried anything like this, so any help is appreciated!

You can operate a computer with impaired hands by breathing.

---

A research group from Kinki Univirsity made a new device that allows you to use a straw to
operate a computer by breathing.

With the straw, the cursor moves up by exhaling strongly, down by exhaling weakly.

It moves right by inhaling strongly, left by inhaling weakly.

When university students tried it, they were able to use it well in 1 week.

For people with impaired hands, until now, there were devices to operate a computer by moving one's eyes.

But this new device is cheaper to make.

According to the research group, this device that allows you to operate a computer just by
breathing is the first in the world.

They want to make it more convenient so that everyone will be able to use it in 2 years.

"If people who can't move their hands use a device like this, they will be able to communicate with many more people.
We have also recieved help from people with disabilities and will continue to study so that
everyone can use it conveniently," The research group's teacher Ichirou Kitayama said.

If you did these translations yourself, that's really impressive :D

You can operate a computer with impaired hands by breathing.

You made the subject 'you,' but the average person doesn't have impaired hands. You could start of with 'It is possible for someone with impaired hands..' or 'Even with impaired hands, one can..' etc.

For people with impaired hands, until now, there were devices to operate a computer by moving one's eyes.

Don't be afraid to restructure the sentence to make it sound more natural :) also in the last paragraph, 'conveniently' might be better as 'with convenience' or something like that.

Thank you for helping! :D
I always knew translating would be different from just understanding but I never realized how hard it actually is.
I think I will continue to do this for practice and hopefully get better.
