Help with grammar :)

Postby shinigami016 » Tue 12.17.2013 2:56 am

I've had this sentence for homework and it's been bugging me ever since.

私はその人のことが哀れでならなかった

哀れでならなかった is the confusing part. I'd appreciate some help about the grammar used here and the translation. Thanks! :)

A search on alc.co.jp turned up:

~のことが心配でならない
be beside oneself with worry about

which seems to be using the same grammar, and edict has "can't help worrying" as an alternative translation of 心配でならない, so your sentence is along the lines of "I couldn't help pitying that person."

See this page for an explanation (note that で in your sentence is the て form of だ/です.)
