Hello all. I have an interest in learning Japanese, but a simpler need in identifying Japanese characters in a framed water color picture that was given to me. I want get a sense of who the artist was and more importantly, to make sure I have it hanged in the proper position and not upside down :wink:

Here is the picture of the artwork and a picture of the signature, please note the artwork is sideways. I currently have the picture oriented so that the signature is on the bottom right:

I think the signature would be easier to read if you rotated it 90 degrees clockwise. (Not saying I could read it then, grass script is largely illegible to me.)

That would be better if I could rotate it. Somehow when the jpegs posted they turned sideways. Here goes again.

First one could be 芝, the second one could be 衣, the bottom one I haven't a clue.

1st one is 芝
2nd one is 光
3rd one is 作

1st and 2nd is name of artist.
芝光 shikou
3rd one "作" is verb means "make" or "made"

芝光作 = painted by shikou.
