Translation Needed
This picture was found in my fathers bedroom closet about a month ago. He got it during WWII and has been sitting in the closet for about 60 years. Can anyone help with it's translation?
Thanks
Joe

When you hit reply, you will see at the bottom of the text window a series of buttons. Paste the url of the picture (you will have to find a host for it elsewhere) then highlight the url and click on the img button.

RE: Translation Needed
Here's a sloppy translation of it:
これはお父さんの部屋のクローゼットに見つかった写真です。
お父さんがこの写真を受け取ったのは第2世界大戦でした。
これが60年ぐらいずっとクローゼットの中にあった。
I'm not sure if it's all correct but, I think I've kept the main parts in it. If you can't read it, tell me and I'll write it in all hiragana!

ymlover,
I think he wanted a translation of the picture, which he hasn't been able to post. Not a translation of what he wrote.
Fairly nice translation though.

What he wrote is just about the picture in the father's room. Nothing to do with the 'content' of that picture.

RE: Translation Needed
I really thank you for upload.
Is there any sign on backside of the picture?
maybe someone will translate it, I also try to translate.... ...... .... umm.
銀杏返しに黒繻子かけて
泣いて別れた隅田川
思い出します観音様 (の)
秋の日暮れの鏡の音
都鳥さえ 一羽じゃ飛ばぬ
昔恋しい水の音
逢えば溶けます 涙の胸に
(河)岸の柳に春の雪

The red parts are different from original lyrics written by Sounosuke Sato.

This picture was drawn around 1944 by a prisoner of war in Guam. My father who was a guard there traded cigarettes for the pictures. He had 4 of them in his bedroom closet for 60 years and nobody knew about them. I have 2 of the 4 drawings. This one the first one I have had framed. The complete picture can be found here. i thought that line started with 「想ひ」, but the ひ could easily be い. are 思 and 想 roughly interchangeable in this case?
otherwise i'm amazed how many of those i could read!
this is a really neat thread and a wonderful picture.

zengargoyle,
thank you for indication.
as you pointed out,the original says...
銀杏かへしに黒じゅす
かけて 泣いて 別れた
隅田川
想ひ出します 觀音様
秋の日暮の鏡の音
都鳥さへ一羽ぢや飛ばぬ
昔 戀しい水の音
逢へば 溶けます 涙の胸に
岸の柳に 春の雪
thank you for indication.

I've found that was a lyrics of a Japanese song called Sumidagawa.(Sumida River)
The song was released in 1937. you will be able to listen the melody, also see correct lyrics(By Japanese) on this site.
h ttp://www2u.biglobe.ne.jp/~tomaru/2000CT.htm
Those are the words of the first and third verses.
It is reminiscences of a girl's first love.
(According to the speaking part, she became a Geisha after that)
I need much time to translate.
どなたか、歌詞を訳せる方はいませんか?
日本語の解説ならおおよそのところは、できるのですが…。。
