RE: -chan ?
~chan can be used for little children, or younger siblings. They use thier first name with ~chan (like I would call my baby sister Katy-chan).

-chan I believe is like a diminuitive. Sorta like calling a girl Katie instead of Kathryn, or Andy isntead of Andrew.

RE: -chan ?
If the boy and girl in your manga book were good friends it may be that she doesn't want to change the relationship with him through making it more formal and using -san. -chan is usually used for younger girls and boy, but I've seen it been used by male high school students when adressing a cute chick they see in the school
So it has a very "cute" mening (if you think young children are cute
):D)
What what!? Where am I? Oh, I\'m sleeping again!

Is it me or do all the Japanese seem to move to Texas? So many people I have met over the internet with a Japanese wife/gf come from Texas...it's eery.
