103 Kanji for level 4 - or more??

Post by SaigoNoBan » Wed 01.18.2006 5:02 am

I studied the 103 四級 kanji and I think I know them reasonably well (I wrote a pile of flashcards which I carry in a cookie jar in my backpack and use for revising during dead times).

Now, it was brought to my attention that there are other kanji required for the grammar section (Counters, 私, 方)... Ok. Good to know, but still no problem here.

Are there any other "hidden" kanji to prepare?

I noticed, for example, that the vocabulary list I downloaded has the words written both in kanji and in kana. Does this by any chance mean that I need to recognise those kanji too for the reading comprehension section, or will the vocabulary items be written in kana? Because, if I have to learn all those kanji like 箱 病院 野菜 etc., I don't think I can sit level 4 this year...:(

Thanks well in advance,
Max

Would you like to share the kanji list you found? I have some lists where there are listed only 80 kanji. So I have 23 hidden ninja kanji ;)

EDIT:
anyway checking in the store: http://www.thejapanshop.net/kfc1.htm there are 103 flashcards for level 4. So I think you got them all.

By "Hidden kanji" I mean kanji that are not on the official lists but that may yet come up in any part of the examination.

Edit - reply to Tx's edit:
yes, but my question is:

Are these 103 kanji only the ones I will be tested SPECIFICALLY on in the kanji section, while other kanjis might pop up in reading/grammar/whatever, or are these the ONLY kanji I will see on the question papers?

SaigoNoBan San..what do ypu mean by the thing?

He means to ask if there are any kanji imbedded in the recommended vocabulary list that don't appear on the official "learn these kanji for level 4 test" list.

To be on the safe side, I wouldn't take any official or semi-official japanese test until I could read auto-erotic adult novels with semi adequate proficiency in japanese. But these are the ramblings of a mad-man.

80 was the old number of kanji for JLPT 4. I believe it was increased to 103 in 2003.

That should be all the kanji you need for the test. Vocabulary which usually is written in kanji will be written in hiragana only, I believe.

If you really want to be ready for anything on some japanese test, I recommend you memorize all the kanji on this page.

If you don't want to look like a sissy, you will also take the kanji quizzes. Anything less indicates that you are a girly man. I am bench pressing a respectable 1000 kanji at the moment. I'm also flexing my stroke order techniques on a regular basis for the public to marvel at.

spank, a JLPT 4 (four) test is a JLPT 4. I don't get the reason why you should study 1460 kanji (and 5 test per kanji are a max of 7300 words!) for a beginner study test. It's like learning to drive on a Ferrari Diablo. That's simply nonsense.
You use shoudo to marvel people?
You are bench pressing 1000 kanji??

Pleaaaase...

ああ、そうですか。私は、他面、日本語を習いたいんです。

Oh, how nice. I, on the other hand, would like to learn Japanese.

Clay, they put furigana after the kanji knowledge portion is completed. So you don't have to "read" them. At least for 4kyuu. Furigana is the reading above the kanji for those who don't know.
