I wanted to learn Japanese, for reasons currently unknown to me. I didn't know why or what I'd do until after I started learning. I figured I'd broaden my horizons, but that can't be the only reason. I'll probably move there during college as a study abroad student, get married and have an excuse to stay there. :P

In short, I don't know.

Very nice, totally the same with me!

It's because I have two little cousins that are learning japanese and I cannot let them be better than me, just kidding. I already speak english (or at least I can read), and I really enjoy learning new languages, first I tried german, but I couldn't spend much time studing, so I stopped (maybe I will finish that after japanese). then I noticed that japanese is very similar to portuguese (I mean the logic behind the language), so it would be easy. Beyond, I'm a sansei, so I'm surrounded by japanese stuff, my mother speaks and can help me often.

whats a sansei? I looked it up and got this...

酸性: さんせい (n) acidity; Common
産制: さんせい (n) birth control;
三省: さんせい (n) frequent reflection (meditation); Common
参政: さんせい (n) participation in government;
賛成: さんせい (n,vs) approval; agreement; support; favour; Common
三世: さんせい children of nisei; 3rd generation in US;

the only other thing I could think of was that you meant
you are in hawaii or from there.

jinksys,

The sansei I said is the 3rd generation, son of nissei (2nd generation), and this one is the son of issei (this one was born and came from Japan), I guess that it doesn't matter the country the original japanese guy chose to imigrate, since he arrives there, he becomes a issei, his son a nissei and so on.
I'm not 100% sure about issei, but it's what I've found.

I just couldn't get why you thought about Hawaii.

A Japanese bar and grill in Hawaii? That I've never heard of. Seems interesting :)

I learn the Japanese language for Japanese culture and anime. Actually, anime IS culture.

By the way, I have always been wondering...
TokyoRoze-san, how do you place pictures in your signature area?

Since I'm new around here, I'll dredge up this thread and add my own $.02.

I've been into foreign languages since high school, but never had any interest in Asian languages or culture (beyond Jackie Chan movies). Last year several things all came together:

1. I gave my 2 year old the nickname "Bundo" (long story). My wife didn't like it. To irritate her, I decided to see if bundo.com existed. It does: it's a Japanese site. It irritated me that my browser could display it but I couldn't read it. I still don't know who The Bundo is.

2. I got into console video games a few years ago, mainly RPGs, and interest in Japanese seems to go along with that. I picked up a book on Katakana from the library, but never worked at it.

3. Last summer my manager called me up (I'm a telecommuter) and told me that even though I'd worked an insane amount of hours all year, I wasn't getting a raise. I took the rest of the week off out of disgust and decided to play a video game. I'd never given Shenmue a fair shake, so I fired it up. Wow! Shenmue put me in Japan, and I loved it. Later that day I went to the bookstore and found a shelf full of Japanese books and Pimsleur courses. I was hooked.

I guess the reason why I keep working at Japanese is that it's fun. Pimsleur lessons are amazing, and I love studying the books. I doubt that I'll ever go to Japan (unless I can work out a business trip somehow). I really don't know any Japanese people, though I'm starting a beginners' class next month just to get some real life practice. Yep, I guess I'd have to say that I'm doing it primarily because it's a fun intellectual challenge.
