Why is imported (dubbed) anime about 」20?!?!?!

Postby Jeimuzu-kun » Wed 01.18.2006 10:58 am

WHY!!!

Ok, i get 」5 a week (american equivalent: approx $7-10) but come on! why does one series of anime (take chobits for example) have to be 」20??? thats 4 weeks of allowance!

At least manga is 」7 (approx $10) so im still happy :)

You even see blockbuster films going for less than anime films/series. NO FAIR!!!!:@

Series = more air time = longer and/or multiple DVDs. You're paying for the amount of content.

$15 for a 120 minute movie, or $50 for 460 minute, 13 episode series?

Sorry about the US currency. I don't know anything about british currency.

You just have to get it from the right place. I don't want to start advertising places for anime here, but if you look around, you should be able to get your DVDs for about 12 pounds.

Anime is usually more expensive than movies, because movie age quick, and the studio has alrerady made their money back in cinema showings. Anime is expensive because the licenses are expensive, and because people will pay for it.

DVDs are just obscenely expensive in Japan. So are CDs.

I just looked at the price for DVDs of the "Tsuri-baka Nikki" ("Fishin' fool diaries"), a popular film series -- each DVD is \3112. That's thirty bucks for a SINGLE DVD. One movie.

Add to that the cost of subbing/dubbing and repackaging... Yeah, Japanese videos are expensive.

But here's the thing: You're still doing better than the poor sods in Japan buying DVDs there. Because of the pricing structures, the Japanese manufacturers know they can ream shoppers in Japan, but not overseas.

The film "Spirited Away" will cost you $29.99 in the US ($19.99 from Amazon.com); but \4935 (almost $50!) in Japan. Those poor guys in Japan are paying through the nose.

Compare a season of TV on a DVD. The first season of "24" in the US retails for$59.98 ; the first season of the Japanese cop show "Abunai Deka" costs \10,290. You're way out on top here.

Wow that's extremely overpriced. I thought we had it bad here in the US with one Anime DVD or movie being usually $30.00, but $50 in Japan? That's ridiculous! People in Japan must make alot right?
How much do boxed anime sets cost like a whole 26 episode box set and a dvd collectors (sp?) edition with the first few episodes of an anime and like a limited edition t shirt or figure cost?

Well, for example, take Urusei Yatsura. A DVD boxed set with the entire TV series retails for \126,000. (There are 25 discs, of course, for your $1,200.)

"The Neon Genesis Evangelion DVD Box" retails for ¥56,000. That's 10 discs for your $550.

And that's the reason I stopped watching any anime I can't rent at the local Geo. =)

I'm probably one of the handful of people who visit this site who couldn't care less about anime. The only anime I've ever seen are the Miyazaki movies. I know things were expensive in Japan so being an anime fan (especially a hardcore collector) would really kill your wallet. There was an article I remember hearing about in which it said some Japanese people simply do not having enough room to store all their limited edition boxed sets in their apartments... Gets to a point where you really have to priortize what you're going to buy since there's SO much of it.
