That Yankee and dat' psychic

well, from Furuba/ Fruits Basket, i've always wondered why they called one of Tohru's friend a "Yankee". my friends and i just assumed that people where saying a mean way of saying she is American, but we're not entirely sure! so if anybody can answer, please do so!

Yankees are basically the Japanese equivalent of the American stereotype of "White Trash." They wear bathroom slippers outside, always dye their hair blonde, usually have kids at a very young age (without getting married of course), and like to buy really cheap stuff that looks like expensive stuff. They are usually found around ドンキホテ, a store I like to compare to Walmart (just because it's dirt cheap and you can buy ANYTHING there.... knock-off rolex's, car stereo systems, and yukatas with the "playboy" logo on the back! I feel like "White Trash" people usually live out of Wallmart, and yankees definately live out of ドンキホテ).

Hope I didn't offend anyone...

I explained this to one of my Japanese friends, and she said "I used to always shop at ドンキホテ so I must be yellow trash!"

I'm not sure at the origins of the word, but I have a few theories...

^That explanation is helpful now because I too, wondered why they called Tohru a yankee. I really hope no one was offended by the word "White Trash" though...lol at the "yellow trash"(I'm "yellow" too).
