Here's a link to the Elementary School Level Asahi Newspaper page.
http://www.asagaku.com/
It looks to be 5th or 6th grade level.

RE: History/Literature
Anyone read the whole 電車男 thing? Generally, how is it like? It is casual, etc?
I often chat in Japanese and I feel this kind of reading is easier due to small sentences and dialogues. Would you say 電車男 could be appropriate reading material?
Thanks!

RE: History/Literature
Sorry I had to be away most of a week. Looks like the beginner (or maybe "early intermediate" sounds better?) group has a text? Yatta!!!!
How about those of us who can read adult-level Japanese? Are people still interested? Should we vote on a text?

For short easy books, I would recommend something like Murakami Haruiki's 羊男のクリスマス, which is only about 50 pages long.

RE: History/Literature
Slight suggestion.... Perhaps instead or in addition to the reading group, we could have a sort of writing group? Or maybe we could compose short story type things, help each other correct the mistakes, and then use them for reading AND writing practice? Just an idea XD

RE: History/Literature
How will it work for your reading?
? Grouping with (by(?)) your Japanese Level (A to C )
A advanced
B middle
C beginner
?Translate Japanese text (as a start, 2〜3 sentences at a time).
・ First, group C translate in 1-2 day (s),
・ then group B translate in 1-2 day, (participate in group C discussion)
・ last, group A translate in 1-2 day. (join grope B +C , teach each other)
( The period might be discussed in your group members.)
? Go to next sentences.

Coco,
その概念がいいと思います。こうした行動であるば、皆は練習が出来るだけではなく、上級や中級の翻訳も読んで理解を挑戦することが出来ます。
。。。
ごめん、今日は頭が疲れたから、日本語があまり書けません。

I have a funny Japanese anecdote which can be used as a preliminary drill for reading novels.
If there are some members ( at least two *) who like to join reading Japanese, I will post that article, it's really short, only 11 sentences.
* include a person who is advanced with Japanese (group A)

Thanks, Hari-san, Rich-san.
I will post that article tomorrow.
8th March around 07:00 (USA EST)
8日(水) around 21:00 (Japanese time GMT+9)
I'm going to make new thread in this History/Literature section.
In the case of beginner's participating,I'm going to post only one sentence at one time.
(Nobody join group C , I will post entire article at once)
so far, members are
(敬称略)
A advanced: Harisenbon
B middle: Rich
C beginner : none
I hope grope C starts this trial.
If there is plural member in your group, please discuss how long dose your group need to translate one sentence.
