RE: Trial
Sorry, I've been busy prepairing for final exams.
I nominate Shirley Sia as group C leader.
There is some grammar I don't know yet or have forgotten, but this is my guess:

RE: Trial
I just have to say... for the most part, I understood (excluding the fact I needed a dictionary to look up vocabulary) except I was a little confused by some of the grammar. For example:
行きたくなった
I assumed it means "wanted to go"? And there were a few tiny other things, but that was the main thing I didn't get.

<Shibakoen runs in late as always> I wanna play, too!!!:D</interuption>
I think I'd be in B. My vocab is not good, but overall I think I'd be more advanced than C and not as advanced as A, thus B. I'm usually on EST, but for the next week I'll be on Tokyo time!!!! (Thus I probably won't post much this week, no classes so no library visits needed). Anyway, I'll try to contribute when B needs to contribute. (And I'll try not to cheat by asking my girlfriend!!)
*EDIT* the text in white thing is brilliant! Oh, is trash talking allowed??? LOL!!

RE: Trial
Sachi-san, I understand it like this (I'm not totally sure if it's right, so I suggest you wait for other opinions):
行きたくなった is formed by two parts: 行きたく and なった
行きたく is the adverb derived from 行きたい (which, I assume, you know means "(I) want to go"). You form it by dropping the い and replacing it with a く.
なった is the plain past form from the verb なる, which means "become".
So, joining the two together you get something like "I became wanting to go", or "I suddenly wanted to go", "suddenly felt the urge to go" or something like that.
...I think, at least.

RE: Trial
my questions:
走る - can this be used for driving or riding in a car. it seems strange to be 'running' on a 'highway'. i'm thinking like jogging down the interstate in the US. so i'm a bit confused about 高速道路を走る.
トイレに 行き たく なった の で - on first reading i took this as 'toilet to, go-want-became(completed)-thing for' where 'go' and 'want' are conjunctive... grr... hard to explain. i guess i don't get the sense of urgency or 'becoming needing to go' but more of a 'stopped for the thing that got done'.

RE: Trial
Sorry for the interruption, I would like to highlight these:
Dear Group C members
Since Coco san really spent her time and made so much efforts to organise all these stuffs in order to motivate us or boost our Japanese level, whatsoever.... kindly please read through all the posts from her, make sure we understand what she was trying to tell us.
In addition, we have Richvh-san being so kind and helpful to translate her japanese texts into english, we should appreciate that too.
Final and most important, [b]please find time to do the Trial sentences given, and please post your translation (preferable to other colour I guess, Grace Period 5 days ?), and if you really can't, at least drop a note to tell them ( B & A ) your problems (eg. Away for vacation/work load/examination etc etc......). Please try using edit in order not to "flood" the posts here, getting dizzy now.....

Zengargoyle-san, I think ので must be taken as just one word, a conjunction meaning "because" (like から).

RE: 約束事 + Rich さんへ
Shirley Sia
Richさんへ
・2案は 「two 翻訳案s」です。a second draft だと「第二案」か、「2番目の草稿(翻訳案)」になると思います。
・「なるべく参加していただきたいというのが私の気持ちです」の「という」は
× Sachi

RE: Trial
I think everyone in group C that contributed a translation of sentence 1 has a pretty good grasp of the sentence's meaning (which, over literally, would be "As for I, who was facing north and running on the highway, due to developing a desire to go to the toilet, stopped at a service area.) However, most of them are rather awkward as English, so what remains is polishing the English version. Here's my favored version:
Natemb, Shibakoen, what are your takes?
(Translation in white)
As I was heading north on the highway, I pulled into a rest area to use the rest room.
Natemb, Shibakoen, what are your takes?

RE: Trial
here's the un-hidden version:
as an aside, i might try and add 'spoiler' BBcode tags to the board over the weekend. i've seen them on some other sites. [ spoiler ] some text here [ / spoiler ] will make the text "black on black" but if you move the mouse over the text it becomes "white on black". which keeps one from having to select the text in order to read it...
maybe next time around we can keep a more ordered appearance to the thread. maybe something like:
* coco-san post with source material
* 'C' group posts
* 'B' group posts
* 'A' group posts
then everybody can just keep editing their original post, but i'm afraid it will be hard to follow that way. you'll have to keep going back and re-reading all the posts to follow the activity...
another random idea is to fully utilize the Subject area of each post by including the line-number and group information. "line 1 source", "line 1 group C", "line 1 group B", ...
maybe even including the title of the original text. "text XXXX line 1 group C". since the site search feature looks at the Subject line that might give an easy way to find things.
ie. a search for "text XXXX line 4" should give a page with all of the posts about that particular line from that source...

Personally, I think rather than having the 'spoiler' tags to use, it might be worth while to look at the 'hidden' type stuff you see on some boards
That way, rather than having all the text still be there (you just can't see it until you highlight it), it would actually be completely hidden until you click on the 'unhide' button, at that point it will expand out and show you the hidden text. That way, everyone can post their translations, however long they may be, and things should still stay nice and clean looking.
I was thinking about maybe making up a quick vocab/grammar checklist for people to look at when each new section comes out, and if we had something like that 'hidden' command that we could use, I think it would really help out to keep things from getting too long and confusing, and at the same time, do a nice job of well...keeping things hidden.

I was running on the highway facing north when, since I didn't want to go to the toilet, I stopped at a service station.
I would like to know that's exact meaning of 向かって走っていた. I thnk I did understand the meaning but I don't get exactly what grammar is going on.
Also I think 行きたくなった is short for 行きたくなかった but I'm not sure.
