つもり intend on doing

planning on; intend to

Shows the intention or conviction of the speaker. It is also used to describe the speaker's belief of someone else's intentions: "so-and-so is convinced he is..."

  • Verb (dictionary form)
  • -na adjective + な
  • -i adjective
  • noun + の

例文(れいぶん) EXAMPLE SENTENCE

(かれ)は、来月日本(らいげつにほん)()つもりだそうです。

he-(topic particle)-next month-Japan-to-go-plan-appears to be

It looks like he is planning on going to Japan next month.

COMMENTS

  • The kanji, while not as common as kana alone, is ()もり which comes from ()もる (to pile up; to accumulate)
  • Compare つもり with the similar 予定(よてい). 予定(よてい) implies an already set plan to do something whereas つもり is a firm but not yet set intention to do something. Click here to learn more.
  • To make the negative, you can say ~つもりは(or が)ない - to have no intention of (doing something)
