the amount of kanji that i presently know is somewhere around 3000 - 5000 characters...although some pronounciations are wrong, i managed to get the meanings.....i learnt them when i was learning chinese.....i know its hard for someone who's not a native speaker of Japanese, Chinese, or Korean to learn kanji, but hey, KEEP IT UP!!

well, then i think that the key to learning kanji is repetitiveness, cuz that was how i learnt...i remember my teacher driling me to write sumthing like 4 pages of new kanji characters a day for my 1st year of study...as you know it, the chinese, japanese, koreans are notorious for their reputation and ability to study..

yea, repetitive writing and copying....ah, now i remember when i got to my 3rd year, my teacher made me copy entire essays of 500-1000 words length in kanji...was so hectic for me cuz i was only 9 years old at that time...
the other key to learning kanji is to use them as often as possible...its the same case when you're learning japanese...i have many friends who learnt japanese and passed JLPT but they didn't use the language much and after a few years..they forgot a lot about the fundamental grammar and vocab....
i recommend you get a kanji dictionary and bring it along wherever you go...try also to associate kanji with pictures cuz kanji/chinese writings are based on pictograms....most of the time you'll be able to get a connection between them and this makes it much easier to remember those characters!

i have always been interested in asian culture and history, since 7, i've always wanted to meet and asian person. in school, everytime we had to choose a research topic, i always chose "ancient china" or somrthing like that.B)

RE: How many Kanjis do you know?
ancient chinese history is extremely difficult to learn cuz the chinese had over 5000 years of history...but its one one my favourite subjects...for the apparent reason that i watch tons of Cantonese drama series by TVB in Hong Kong...
even at high school, i was still learning chinese (having tuitions)....and we had to learn chinese history....ancient chinese texts were written in a different grammatical form and we had a tough time learning it...but i pass but GCE-equivalent exams chinese subject with grade 3 so i guess i'm happy
