Have you ever heard about Miyamoto Musashi(宮本武蔵＝みやもと・むさし）?
They say 宮本武蔵　used　上総介藤原兼重's Swords, because 和泉守藤原兼重いずみのかみ ふじわらのかねしげ is the same person as 上総介藤原兼重．
Others say that he used Swords by 和泉守藤原兼重 who are not same person as 上総介藤原兼重.

If you like to know some more about Nihonto,Here is the siteof Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai or the Society for Preservation of the Japanese Art Swords(loong name). Now 橋本龍太郎(はしもと・りゅうたろう)is the Chairman of the NBTHK. Mr.Hasimoto was a prime　minister during 1996-1998.

I've heard of Miyamoto Musashi( The book of five rings, and the basis of the Samurai trilogy). Did not know the smith that made his nihonto though. Thanks for the link and info Coco san.

Yeah I saw that on Discovery channel i'm not sure if it was myth busters... But yeah I saw that. It was sick!

Generally speaking, yes. But not all nihonto are katana, while all katana (properly speaking -- not counting Chinese knock-offs) are nihonto.

heh, sweet video. i watched the machine-gun one first and my first thought was "hey, i know that announcer's voice!"...

it's not that suprising though... i would expect any heavy-duty piece of cutlery to be able to split a few bullets before failure, lead and copper are very soft metals. it sorta looked like more damage was done by the bullets that just glanced the side of the blade.

It would be interesting to know if it had been ever used and how many times it had been repolished (since it's more than 330 years old, it's said that good sword needs to be repolished once per 100 years).
But I suppose that blade had been only used during the tameshigiri (cutting test) because there is no visible wear on the edge.
