Sorry if my tranlation left a bit to be desired there, but as coco just said, the first sentence is in fact being said by a women, where as the second one (the one we're working on), is said by our narrator, talking about how guys don't really speak to each other in the bathroom, which I guess my translation was a bit unclear about. Maybe something along the lines of this would be a bit better...

From what I know though, guys don't talk to each other in the restroom.

Even at that, you could probably still take that as being said by a women if you saw that sentence just by itself. In context though, I'm thinking it would be assumed that it's our narrator (who is a guy) talking about what he thinks to be common place when it comes to guys talking with other guys they don't know in in the restroom.

Agreed. I've been assuming -- so far -- that the narrator is a man, and the other person in the restroom is a guy, too. That may change as the story unfolds, but such is my reading now.
