English (at least my version) doesn't really have the equivalent for 「そうか…それで、」in the normal flow of conversation so i just used "so,". i'm also going to assume that it's a guy in the next stall since the narrator hasn't expressed any suprise from hearing the voice of the opposite sex in the restroom...[/spoiler]

does Japan have a 'Candid Camera' type of show?

It's called "historical present." Makes things sound more immediate. If you've ever seen a documentary, you've undoubtedly encountered it:

Now I try to explain how to find the peopl's Gender of this trial for "wrap-up" thread. I hope someone help to explain.

Line: 2 can not figure out
Line: 3 the person from next door --- male (high probability) Because やあis not common amang females, so "私" is considered also male.
Line : 4 guaranteed with males. Because of 男は皆そうですが.
Line : 5 だよ as まあまあだよ for not familiar person is generally manlike speech.
Line : 6 the ending の as 今、なにしてるの? is used by males and females.
Line : 7 私 is used by both.
Line : 8 Commonly 君 is used by male to address "you", however should not use for elder or higher person.
Line : 9 隣の男 means " the man next to me"
Line :10 Generally おい is used by male. 俺 is also a noun that called himself among close friend in this context.

Ok, this is the original texts given by Coco-san :
Line 1 : 高速道路を北に向かって走っていた私は、トイレ行きたくなったのでサービスエリアに立ち寄りました。
Line 2 : 手前の個室はふさがっていたので、その隣に入りました。
Line 3 : 便器に腰を下ろそうとしたその時、隣から 「やあ、元気？」と声がしたのです。
Line 4 : 男は皆そうですが、トイ レで見知らぬ人と話をすることはありません。
Line 5 : どうしていいかわからなかったので、ためらいがちに「まあまあだよ」と答えました。
Line 6 : すると隣人は「そうか……それで、今何してるの？」と言うのです。
Line 7 : 妙だなと思いましたが、私はバカみたいにこう答えました。
Line 8 : 「君と同じだよ。ウンコしようとしてるんだ！」

For those that are wondering, just to let u know, the above trial of translating to English has been completed, all members involved knew the story behind....
So, Coco-san is actually doing a final conclusion from all the coaching and comments of A & B members (since lost of msgs from 28th Mar - 4th Apr), and also highlighting on how to identify the gender from the text itself or usage of certain JP words. (Did i misread you ? )
