How many Kanjis do you know?

a person who didn't study in college (i.e high school education) would most probably know 1000-3000 kanji characters....university/ college students would land in the catagory of 5000, to be considered literate, you have to at least know 1000 kanji characters.....

I've been at it for about a month, and so far I know about 53 or so. that was mostly in the 1st two weeks. I know both simple ones like 火 or 女 and some more complicated ones like 愛　or 飛. I can learn about 5 a day with signifiacant effort. yet i've only learned about 3 in the past 2 weeks, since I lost my kanji book and have to pick them up at random. I hope to know 300 or so by the end of the summer. unfortuantely for some I don't know the reading, suck as the kanji for 'mirror'.

I only know around 200, though I've never focussed on it much - I learn at school, so right now I'm mostly only interested in getting the syllabus down pat. We do focus on grammar a bit, though, I think.

The average adult will know about 2000 kanji, but yea college students know about 3000:

Kids have to learn aboiut 1004 before they get out of elementary, 1945 by the time they graduate high school, and you aren't required by schools to learn any more, but if you want to read your college textbooks you need to know about 3000k.

According to Langenscheidt's Kanji und Kana 1 (Kanji and Kana 1), the average educated Japanese knowns around 3000 Kanji. The approximated total number of Kanji in use today including in specialist books and literature is 6000-7000.

I'm using the Heisig method; I know the meanings of about 300 and the readings of about 15.

out of all 3 ways of showing literacy, (hiragane.katakana,kanji) i'd say kanji is the most difficult.

Yes, seeing as how there are only ~96 kana and 2000+ kanji, I'd say kanji is the most difficult.

kanji is only hard when you don't understand the form of it...learn up the radicals and you should have the building blocks for kanji...think of kanji characters as lego blocks...stack and mix them together to create new kanji...
