国字(こくじ)
I am taking a Japanese Writing class and this is the topic that I picked for my final paper. I have found all of the Kokuji kanji (or at least I think I have), but I am on a more important search. My question that I would like to find out the answer is:
Why was kokuji created? Why did they need to have kanji for those words? Why couldn't hiragana and katakana do the trick?
If anyone could shed some light that would be great. Thanks.

You want me to translate a 4 page wikipedia article for you? You must think I'm really bored. :/
Check out the page that Tony linked you to. It doesn't give much on the reasons, but does have some information.

針千本さんのお気持ちはよく分かります。私は最近、答える前に、その方の過去の質問とその後の対応をチェックすることにしています。ご参考まで。;)
