Japanese Classic Cartoon(1933)
not quite anime, but close enough
came across this recently, a Japanese cartoon from 1933:
UGOKIE-KO-RI-NO-TATEHIKI(1933)
(Moving picture -Fox and Asian racoon's cheats each other)
Director:Ikuo Oishi
on YouTube
tanuki vs. kitsune, old-school-style.

That is so cool. So full of imagery and symbolism. I'm still wondering why the bald eagle turned into the samurai. I wish I knew more about the Oni in the cartoon. Like the one-eyed kid with 1 leg and 2 more legs for arms... Okashi desu ne...

the bald eagle was really a 狐(きつね) - fox. foxes are known for their shape-shifting powers and trickery. but i still have no clue why the fox turned into a samurai....

yeah....the whole thing was full of allusions to myths, legends, and folklore about obake (ghosts), oni (demons), kitsune (fox), tanuki (japanese raccoon), etc. I really enjoyed it (despite the wierdness
) because i knew quite a few of those legends. I suppose thats the next thing Clay-san should add here, a thing about myths and stuff.

Very interesting! I didn't understand anything of what was said, but it was fun to watch!
[spoiler] And of course, I loved the ending. The 狸 won, yay!
