I didn't want to have to keep bugging you about my problems with JLS, but I thought I better had so it doesn't happen to anyone else...

I installed .NET 1.1 and I have Windows 98SE. When I try and open any part of JLS the following error comes up:

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just in time (JIT) debugging, the config file for this
application or machine (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the machine
rather than being handled by this dialog.

Then if I choose to continue anyway all the kana/kanji are shown as question marks. I posted the full error message so you had as much idea of what was wrong as possible.

Sorry...

Does anyone can find a mistake in these sentences?
( not my English sentence but following Japanese sentence. ^^;

【sentence 30】
「あの家は私のおばあさんが小さい時に住んでいた丘の上にあってほなぎくに囲まれまわりにりんごの木が植わっていた家によく似ている」

【sentence 30】
美しいものが与えてくれる感動は素晴らしいものだったが、私にはその感動を保持することも、いつまでも繰り返すこともできなかった。世界で最も美しいものでさえも、最後には私を退屈させていまったのである。

TO Phreadom-san.

First of all, as a Japanese I really appreciate the wonderful program that you made.
I'd like to point out something to this program more refined one for Japanese learner. so please allow my lack of English ability. Thank you.
-----------------
(sentence 30)

I can't figure out the 漢字 「一」 in these sample sentences.
「君の仕事についてはお客さんから不満が殺到している。すぐに辞めてもらおう」ー

そして、その小さなウサギの二人は大きな森の中でいっしょに幸せに暮らして、たんぽぽをたべたり、ひなぎくを飛んだりクローバーを通りぬけたりオークの実を探したりして長い間暮らしました。

「ー」(音引き) is look alike 漢字「一」, but never same.
A first quoted sentence is not even 「ー」 I think.
same problem.
19世紀末でも、イギリス海軍〜 ナイフとフォークを
2月27日の〜スケジュール〜
フォークは裕福な人々の〜

--------
イスラム系共和国が独立国家共同体に参加しない場合、それらの国々は独自の勢力を形成し、一触即発の民族的、宗教的な亀裂を生じかねない、と?A、西側の消息筋は警告しています。

I can't understand why such a political sentence (also "obsoletism") you have picked up. There is not ?A anymore after 1991 as far as I know.

I'm looking at getting a mac next as well... what we might do, is try to port this to use Mono (basically a unix version of .NET) to see if this can't be ported to Mac OS X, Linux etc.

I have a lot of friends that are non-windows people, and I feel bad leaving them out.

Thanks for the good word! :D

That would be great :) And you're welcome!

I guess less than 20% of Japanese know about ブースカ.
水田さん is kind of ........ :D

This sentence does't make sense by its self. I guess this is a part of long paragraph(??) or something.
I understand It was quoted from Jim Breen's site. The case of 機材/差/程度etc. 's usages, this sentence may work. but in your program, I don't think it's good sentence for translation, 漢字learning.

If you need other sentences to replace, I think I can find sentences.
( I can't translate into English though)

great program i will seed it for a week on bittorent.
i recomend tweaking your monitors resolution a bit so you can fit more things on the screen.
i love the "Games" on it.

the only thing that i didnt like was i had to downgrade some things on my computer. But you can use a wrapper so you dont actually have to downgrade your .NET

basically great job.

EDIT:
if you want i will host it on my site, i noticed you only had 3 mirrors. pm me if you want me to host it.

Thanks for the offer! As for the program... you can run both .NET 1.1x and 2.0 at the same time. Both Scott and I are doing that, as well as a number of users. Anything else that you thought you had to downgrade?

Everything is up to date here and running fine. No downgrades or anything.

But just for the record, Scott just got Visual Studio 2005 and is in the process of porting the suite to .NET 2.0 for the next major release. :)

We actually have someone interested in doing a real port to OS X. I'll have to talk to Scott about it when he gets back from vacation. :P

I would personally love to see this, as I plan on getting a Mac myself before long and would like to be able to continue using the program without having to jump through hoops. I had to deal with this pain myself recently when my desktop computer died for a month and I was stuck in Linux. :)

Well, one of the strengths of Breen's examples collection is also its weakness. Some of the examples are lifted from whole paragraphs or dialogues, and the rest of the material is present in the database, so if you happen to poke around in the raw file you could actually piece together a few flowing narratives from some of the sentences scattered throughout. This would be a great deal of work, however, given the database organization. As it is now, one frequently ends up pulling a sentence separate from its context, so while we may find a somewhat helpful example of vocabulary usage, it may also end up reading as random nonsense.

I have a pretty nice examples database that I recently extracted from some hardware hacking of my old and dying Canon Wordtank, but I'm certain it would be violating copyright to distribute it. It's been very handy for me, however, since I adapted it for use on my PDA.

Unfortunately, I don't think there's much out there in the public domain other than Breen's file, unless you want to go to all the work to put it together yourself. There are any number of language lesson sites from which you could collect some better paired Japanese/English sentences, and I imagine they might allow you to use their material if you want to go to the trouble of asking them. Otherwise, just submit your own additions or deletions to Breen's database as you and your users come across them. Jim's very quick about correcting problems, and together with his many users has transformed the original examples database from something so error-ridden that it was virtually unusable into a tool which is occasionally useful. I don't use the examples database much, but anytime I've submitted a correction for an erroneous dictionary entry (most often having to do with incorrect kanji readings), he usually has it fixed in a day or two.

sentence 30

Postby coco » Wed 04.26.2006 9:22 am

【sentence30】
彼は山の上にたどりついた時、人々は彼を王にしようと、彼を町につれていくために乗り物を用意して彼に会いにきた。

Comment:
This sentence is not considered that translated into Japanese by professional translator. ( The original material is not Japanese, I believe. )
I don't think it is fine Japanese sentence. Grammatically this sentence is not incorrect, but we call this kind of sentence 悪文.

【sentence 30】
普通銀行と長期信用銀行を区別するのは、前者は長期的で、大口金融で、一方後者は、短期的で、小口金融業務を引受けている。

Comment:
On 1st April of 2006, last 長期信用銀行(=あおぞら銀行) transformed into 普通銀行.
I think there is not 長期信用銀行 anymore in Japan.
Even there were some 長期信用銀行s in Japan, an explanation of 長期信用銀行 and 普通銀行 are "opposite". Even if there was a correct explanation, this sentence was also 悪文 enough. Same level as my English.

【sentence30】
そして、その小さなウサギの二人は大きな森の中でいっしょに幸せに暮らして、たんぽぽをたべたり、ひなぎくを飛んだりクローバーを通りぬけたりオークの実を探したりして長い間暮らしました。

Comment:
I think this sentence was quoted from child book. so need some notes because commonly ウサギ is counted with羽 or 匹.

Finally something I can actually read! :D

ウサギ means rabbit. :)

Yes, I'm that much of a beginner. :(

I'm waiting for Scott to get back this weekend so that I can go over all of this with him.

Thanks again for the feeback everyone! I really appreciate it.

I'm really getting the feeling that I need to start studying the Kanji. I can read hiragana and katakana now... I think I really need to start learning at least some of the basic Kanji to continue moving forward.

phreadom-san. I guess today is sunday in your place.
Did you talk with Sccot-san?
I wonder if Sccot-san would like to correct(/re-fine) your/his material. If so, how ?
I think chat room is useful way to discuss such a thing among plural(person/ people(?).)

Again, I really appreciate the wonderful program that you(Sccot-san ?) made.:)
Anyway those are wrong. need corrections, I think.

【sentence 30】

Please let me know what's going on.
Thank you.
