Kon = 今 = This/The present
Nichi = 日 = Day
Wa = は = Topic marker particle.
Literary (Or whatever): 'Present day',
Meaning: 'Hello',

Daisuke is correct. 今日は means hello.
Of course, you're not far off. 今日 means today.
The difference between the two is は if you notice. It's a simple mistake and one that is quite easy to make if close attention isn't paid.
