guinea pig, friend or food?
Is the Guinea Pig considered a pet or food....or both? In the states they are pets, but in other places (South America for example, they are tasty treats.) Do the Japanese view the Cavy as food or friend?

No, the Japanese do not eat guinea pigs.
Unlike the Koreans (who have been known to eat dogs) and Chinese (who in some places eat monkeys), the Japanese don't eat strange animals that us westerners see as pets. Unless you've got a pet squid or eel...
Oh wait, the Japanese do have horse sashimi. But other than that...

Well, I have never eaten Guinea pigs nor heard of anyone who's ever eaten Guinea pigs... Where in South America is that? I'm curious...

It seemed relevant to me...
I think inamorata was saying that we don't just consider guinea pigs as pets in the West, but use them in animal testing too.
Before we start comparing how different cultures look at certain animals it is surely important to look at how your own culture views them first or hippocracies within in it. Westerneres are often horrified when they hear of someone eating dog, forgetting that dogs have been killed in western laboratories.

But it's a bit different. I mean, I am not killing the dog by doing experiments, but the person who is eating the dog is doing it himself.
But, anyway, I have nothing against people eating dogs, cats or whatever they want. I wouldn't do it, but if they want to, well, I let them be....as long as they don't eat my dog

Man, Koreans eat dogs? That's... gross. No offense intended if there are Koreans (or any other dog-eaters) here. The Chinese eat monkeys? That's halfway to cannibalism.

Monkeys probably taste like bananas.

Dangerously off topic now but... I thought Cui was eaten in Peru farly commonly. I tried to find Cui when I was in Ecuador, but failed. I also got looks of disgust when I asked.
This claims that Cui is Peru's national dish...
