I believe you are referring to ascii art. Where you use letter, numbers, and symbols to create pictures. Its still called ascii art even though you can use whatever text encoding you want, (unicode, ascii, etc)
Most Japanese know it as just AA, which is why I refered to it as such. A number of people also distinguish the AA which includes Shift_JIS characters from that which either uses only the ASCII standard or is expanded to include some of the Unicode symbols that don't exist in SJIS.
I have some things I've done, but they're on my wife's computer so I'll have to post them when I get back home. Maybe I'll post them as lightweight GIFs rather than pure text, so that I can ensure things are displayed the same for everyone.
In the meantime, borrowing from the the handwritten cousin to AA, here's a guy who's well-known to Japanese children:
