The particle "mo"

Postby Diggity » Fri 04.15.2005 8:00 pm

More and more particles... this is the other one I am learning in my current chapter of Genki...

I know that "mo" is used like "too" is in English..

Watashi wa nihongo no gakusee desu. - I am a Japanese language student.
Anata mo nihongo no gakusee desu. - You, too, are a Japanese language student.

I know that "mo" will replace wa, ga, and o.
It is used in conjunction with ni.

Kyoto ni ikimasu. - I will go to Kyoto.
Tokyo ni mo ikimasu - I will to go Tokyo, too.

OK - now that you know what I know... here's my question - How does mo work with the particle de?

Kouen de shashin o torimashita - I took pictures at the park.
Otera mo shashin o torimashita - I also took pictures at the temple.

Do i replace de with mo as in my example, or like ni, are they used together? Using them together creates demo - "but", which I would think would be confusing. This is why I am guessing that it is replaced but I could use someone too clarify. Thanks!

You would use mo in combination with de, since Otera mo shashin o torimashita would give the sense of "I also took pictures of the temple."

So, the sentence would be:
Otera de mo shashin o torimashita.

I see... I would think that using the particle "o" after shashin would show that I was taking pictures at the temple. I would think to say that I was taking pictures of the temple would be -
Watashi wa otera no shashin o torimasita.

Thank you for clarifying though!
