Favorite Japanese Movie

Postby EverestX » Fri 04.08.2005 1:10 am

I'm new to the whole japanese movie thing. Recently I was lucky enough to watch an extremely awsome movie, Battle Royale (1 & 2) and I have kinda been crazed ever since. I was just wondering what some other peoples favorites were and what other movies I should check out.

CASSHERN!!! its a really great movie directed by kiriya kazuaki!!! i would recommend it as one of the top japanese movies with stunning visual details to rival those fro the Matrix trilogy and a really good and original storyline ....and plus point for CASSHEN is that the OST is just superb...the OST being performed by big names such as Shiina Ringo, Utada Hikaru, GLAY, Mondo Grosso, Towa Tei, Onitsuka Chihiro..etc....

and not to forget all of Miyazaki's animation movies...i truly recomend laputa, spirited away and cat's returns....if you're into classic stuff..then try out Akira Kurosawa's epic "7th Samurai"....new release of Umizaru is also pretty good

I haven't seen too many live-action Japanese films. One I really did enjoy, though, was "The Returner." Lots of good action, some really neat special effects, and a pretty different story about a little girl who travels back in time to stop an alien invasion.

All the Japanese movies I ever saw were those horribly dubbed martial arts movies. Oh, and the Gollyzilla series. Where they speak and then seconds later the voices came. lol I think they do anime better than live action.

I have yet to see the Ringu...

Kiyoshi Kurosawa's "Cure" is highly recommended as a crime/thriller/suspense movie, but you also need a fully functioning brain to watch it. It's like Se7en, only more difficult to watch. It's not something you can just snooze through. If you liked Cure, you'll like Kairo, from the same director.

Casshern was also enjoyable. Digital filming could be the thing that closes the gap between Japanese and Hollywood films.

Check out Lady Snowblood if you wish to see one of Kill Bill's influences.

Versus by Ryuhei Kitamura is one hell of an action movie. Guns, swords, vampires, and zombies, all in one package. If you liked Evil Dead, you'll like Versus.

Ichi the Killer and Audition, or almost anything from Takeshi Miike (he did a couple of family films or musicals, which surprised me) is not for the faint of heart. Anybody who can stomach the violence will find a great character study. Note - Matsumoto, "Koroshiya Ichi" and "Ichi the Killer" are the same thing, you listed both titles in the same list.

Uzumaki is a trippy film, and more of a social satire than a horror film. See it if you are a fan of Lovecraft and similar weird stuff.

Ran could have been great, but suffers from not enough editing. It just kept going on and on. Akira Kurosawa has a painter's eye, and it shows in his cinematography. Find his earlier works instead.

The first Ringu was decent, but avoid the prequel and sequels if you can. They do provide insight into the mysteries of the tape and Sadako, though. While I'm on this note, the American Ring Two sucked. Terribly.

Shark Skin Man and Peach Hip Girl is incredibly stylish and zany, and has crazy, colorful characters and dialogue. Tadanobu Asano (who also plays Kakihara in Ichi the Killer) is a chameleon, and is definitely the Johnny Depp of Japan.

Princess Blade was absolute tripe, and so was Battle Royale 2. Returner could have been ok if it decided not to be Terminator meets Men in Black, and is not worth it, not even for the special effects.

A more recent one I just watched yesterday is Azumi. It's taken from a manga, about a group of 10 assassins trained from a young age by this old warrior. Azumi is the only female assassin, and as you can guess, she's the best. There's something odd about it, yet at the same time cliched, but I still liked it.

A long time ago I saw this show that had tons of people or contestants. They would compete and every episode there would be less people. I don't remember the name but I do remember the games being kinda tough and quite painful. There was this one where they would hang from ropes and people would hit baseballs at them. The ones to stay on would continue. Looked painful.

This would be "Takeshi's Castle." In the United States, it is known as the much more inferior "MXC," shown on Spike TV.
