Don't agree on this.
Because 'looking down' is a subjective matter. Can change with time, with places, with people. Look for example at Impressionism. At his time... very few considered it worth a dollar. But now... with that... I by no means want to say hentai is 'artistic'. But's an aspect of japanese popular culture. The problem is... is there anything to discuss really? What for? Seems to me that this kind of threads spawns because 'it's against rules so I'm cool if I talk about it'.

Txkun knows his art-history (thats okay though, cos so do I:)) but just because u think hentai is as low as life (okay agreeing on that) but still a lot of japanese ppl are still j*(Y#@%$ off in the basement on these things...

As to whether or not hentai is part of Japanese culture...

1. Japan is the only country that produces it.
2. The industry is HUGE!

Therefore, it's a very large industry that no other country has = culture

What is there to discuss about? If you like Hentai then fine but it should be a private matter and not discussed infront of everyone. And to wether Hentai is cultural id rather not debate on, but according to the dictionary i think it can be classed as. But can drugs abuse be classed as part of culture as well?

ps.. Americans spend more on porn per year than they do on biscuits!

if 'hentai' == Japanese drawn/animated porn primarily of popular drawn/animated characters.
then 'hentai' == only produced in Japan by definition.

then 'hentai' != only produced in Japan. there's plenty of hentai from almost every country imaginable.

but it is interesting that hentai is such a big business in Japan, and that a suprising number of the artists are women.
