book about the west

Postby queshaw » Mon 06.05.2006 3:33 pm

I remember hearing about a Japanese book about western culture. I think it was probably from before WWII, maybe a long time before that. It was described as being like a book American's might typically find about understanding Japanese culture, except for Japanese about the west, written by a Japanese author. It was also described as being unique and hugely popular when it came out.

Does that sound familiar? Do you know if there is an English translation of it? How's that for vague?

Isn't it 『西洋事情』by 福沢諭吉?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fukuzawa_Yukichi
He is a founder of Keio uni.

Fukuzawa is such a famous figure that he's pictured on the 10,000 yen note. He was very influential in the political and cultural restructuring of Japan during the Meiji area and best of all - he's from Osaka! ;)

I could not find translation version so far.
http://www.kufs.ac.jp/toshokan/50/seiyoj.htm
http://www.keio-up.co.jp/np/detail_cont ... ods_id=302

Shall I ask publisher if there is translation version or not?

edit:
The book title 西洋事情(せいよう じじょう)is translated into"Conditions in the West".
you can see some pages of original on this site. :o

According the publisher, there is no translation of 西洋事情.
Here is the Keio Uni library website.
http://catalog.lib.keio.ac.jp/index_e.html
It doesn't seems to be published in English yet.
However, since my searching may not be well, please make it sure by yourself.
I hope you can get some nice materials help your interests.

I haven't found anything on the library site. I can't even find anything by author "Fukuzawa" or 福沢諭吉. I see "Edo Seiyo Jijo". I don't know if that is it.

"Edo Seiyo Jijo" was for sale in USA, but I see no explanation of what it is.

I checked it.
that is written by 金井円 (かないまどか) published in 1988.
Sorry.
I'm not sure though, Dr. Robert L. Gitler could be the one who wrote some about 福沢諭吉.
http://www.sims.berkeley.edu/~buckland/gitler.html
He seems to be a benefactor of Keio Uni, he was also close to grandchild of But didn't 西洋事情.

hope that helps.

I see there is an autobiography translated into English.

http://bookweb.kinokuniya.co.jp/guest/cgi-bin/bookseaohb.cgi?KEYWORD=%66%75%6B%75%7A%61%77%61+%79%75%6B%69%63%68%69&AREA=02

That might have some of the same subject matter in it. Maybe the library near me has it.
